Community VOICES and The Office for Victims of Crimes will be sponsoring a training seminar for law enforcement, prosecutors, victim advocates, forensic interviewers and other professionals working in this field. The training will be provided by Ellen O’Neill-Stephens, JD, a veteran deputy prosecuting attorney, and Celeste Walsen, DVM . The subject matter will be on “Courthouse Dogs Improving the Investigation and Prosecution of Crimes.” They will be accompanied by their courthouse dog, Molly B, who was trained by Canine Companions for Independence.
The first session will focus on the professional training needed for a dog to successfully do this type of work, how to acquire this type of dog, and the benefits of using courthouse dogs while investigating crimes.
The second session will focus on the use of courthouse dogs during the prosecution of crimes including pretrial interviews, court hearings, trial testimony and sentencing. It will also include information of how to recognize signs of stress experienced by witnesses during their testimony.
Attendance for this event is limited to thirty (30) people. Therefore, please be sure to register as soon as possible to reserve your place, and to ensure that each person has adequate time for interaction with Molly B and to partake in Q&A discussions with the panel.
If you are unable to attend on September 26, 2011, Courthouse Dogs and Molly B. will be available Tuesday, September 27, 2011 11:00 to answer questions and offer information in front of the Grand Staircase, State House Boston, Massachusetts.
