APRIL 4, 2012: Child Protection and Victim Advocacy Groups to Gather in Washington D.C. on April 8, 2012, in support of Mark Lunsford, father of Jessica Lunsford and other surviving parents of murdered children as they ride “Kross Kountry 4 Kids” to raise awareness of child abuse prevention.
The two-week motorcycle ride began in Sacramento, California on Sunday, April 1, 2012, and will finish in California on Sunday, April 15, 2012. The ride is being lead by national child advocate, Mark Lunsford, father of homicide victim, Jessica Lunsford of whom Jessica’s Law was named.
The motorcycle ride stops in Washington, D.C. at the Law Enforcement Memorial at Judiciary Square, Washington, D.C. from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Team members will be distributing blue ribbons, brochures, pins and other informative publications which invite people to get involved and work within their own community to keep children safe and help promote Jessica’s Law and the Adam Walsh Act.
Stop Child Predators, Washington D.C., Community VOICES, Massachusetts, The Surviving Parent Coalition, Christopher’s Clubhouse and the Alicia Project will be taking part in the event.
“This ride is a good reminder to parents nationwide that they need to talk to their kids every day about staying safe in the real world and online. We’re proud to partner with other organizations to promote safety tips for parents such as keeping an eye on who your child contacts, and legislative solutions to lawmakers such as enhanced sentencing requirements, DNA collection of sex offenders and tougher penalties for Internet luring,” said Stacie Rumenap, president of the Washington, DC-based Stop Child Predators.
Laurie Myers, Co-founder of VOICES - a child protection and victim advocacy organization based in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, said, “ In 2008 Mark Lunsford traveled to Massachusetts to assist us in passing Jessica’s Law, we look forward to joining him to remember victims and survivors, and to raise awareness of the importance of strengthening laws to keep our children and communities safe. “
There will be various speakers including: Mark Lunsford, Mika Moulton, President of the Surviving Parents Coalition, and Alicia Kozakiewicz, founder and president of the Alicia Project. Also in attendance will be Wena, a two year old service trained facility dog brought to Massachusetts in November of 2011 to work with victims of violent crime within the courts and community.
Mika Moulton, President of the Surviving Parents Coalition said, “The Kross Kountry 4 Kids - Journey 4 Justice is an event of the Surviving Parents Coalition (SPC) in conjunction with the Army of Angels. Mark Lunsford and Mark & Cindy Sconce who are members of the SPC are the co-captains of this cross country ride and events across the country each evening in the cities they stop in are being coordinated by SPC members. As the President of the SPC I am going to speak in DC at the event on behalf of our national membership.”
