Fitchburg man allegedly throws 3-year-old onto floor; bail set at $50,000
FITCHBURG — Two children are in the custody of the state Department of Children and Families, and a local man is being held on $50,000 bail after he allegedly threw his girlfriend’s 3-year-old son onto the floor, causing what police described as “significant and life-threatening injuries.”
Steven Stuart is facing charges of assault and battery on a child with injury and aggravated assault and battery. He was arraigned last week after police were called to a house at about 7 p.m. Aug. 26 for a report of an unconscious and unresponsive toddler. Police say the house was in disarray and the boy was foaming at the mouth. He was taken by helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
The judge cited possible brain injuries as the reason for high bail.
Cayenne Isaksen, a spokeswoman for the Department of Children and Families, confirmed yesterday that the children were in the agency’s custody.
